New construction includes excavating for the footings and getting the ground level. Unfortunately when we backfill the voids, the ground around the foundation is left very porous which eventually will fill with water.
Over time, especially in the Midwest, the freeze/thaw cycle pushes against your foundation creating cracking. With enough water, you'll have a direct entry point into your basement.
We call this area the bowl, it holds water in and when there's enough of it, the water pressure pushes it through your walls. Waterproofing this area is the best way to stop wet basements.
